PROVE-Pathfinder Outreach

As a student led team, Outreach is at the heart of what we do. Within the PROVE-Pathfinder mission, we have been featured on BBC World Service, and engaged with the public and families through the FUTURES2021 and 4WARDFUTURES Expo. This is in spite of the pandemic interrupting our Outreach activities at a critical point in our mission. Looking towards the future, we aim to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and researchers to look up at the stars with curiosity and excitement, and to capture their imagination on how we can use space to make the world a better place.

Satellites are used everyday in everything we do. Our maps that guide us all come from space and the satellites that orbit our beautiful blue planet. CubeSats are the next generation of small satellites that even some high school students are getting opportunities to build, gain experience with and to send to space. Space might be a hostile environment, but we are learning more and more how we can use satellites in space to help our planet. One of the areas that our research is focused on, is monitoring and predicting volcanic eruptions around the world. Approximately 1.3 billion people live side by side with volcanoes, and eruptions can be catastrophic on a massive scale. With satellites, we have more information at our fingertips that can be used to not only save lives, but to also understand and model how the volcanic eruptions affect our environment as volcanic ash can even blacken out the sun across whole continents.

Within our work, which is guided by world class space experts and vulcanologists from the University of Bristol, we have a ground station, a clean room and the PROVE CubeSat mission. We are expanding our Outreach activities to include a number of activities such as a simulated space mission with chocolate volcanoes. We are very happy to collaborate and would love to work with you, especially local schools in the greater Bristol area. Please get in touch with us on the contact page if you would like to work with our amazing team. If you would like to stay up to date on our Outreach activities, please keep an eye on our blog and our social media as we become more and more involved with inspiring the next generations.
