Ground Station

Background

The UoB Satellite Ground Station has been established in 2017. It is a fully automated satellite tracking station operating in amateur radio frequencies UHF and VHF. The UHF and VHF antennas are mounted on the roof of the Queen’s Building in University Walk and will be used to have radio conversations with the International Space Station, download telemetry from current satellites in orbit, and most importantly, communicate with the UoBSat when it is launched into orbit.

Due to unplanned weather conditions that caused some damage to the Ground Station in recent years, repair work has been carried out in the summer of 2023. The ground station is now largely operational again and ready to receive VHF signals.

The next steps are to finish repair works to the UHF antenna and to transmit the ground station’s first signals.
